Forfarshire Cricket Club 1st XI v West Lothian on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 115 runs

Match report The reports from the Doppler radar showed rain in the vicinity. Fortunately the clouds were bypassing Broughty Ferry and we didn’t see any rain before play started. Drummy managed to win 3 in a row and we decided to have a bat first. There was concern for the Scottish Cup match the next day as a chorus of “You’ll never get four in a row” was heard. The wicket looked good, nice and firm with not too much grass, there was a bare patch in the middle that hadn’t regrown properly but it wasn’t a problem.

Howie and Rhino continued there marvellous form with a 70 run opening partnership. It was only cut short when Howie was ‘allegedly’ out LBW. Rhino was finding it quite easy and he and Cam put on another good partnership. Fodder came in after Cam was caught in the covers and he Ryan also put on a good partnership.

There was some enjoyable stroke play for the spectators to delight in. Ryan was quick to punish anything loose and as usual looked to attack whenever possible. Robert looked in good touch as well and his natural instinct to play a few shots helped keep up a good run rate. Ryan was caught in two minds and caught at mid-wicket when he should have caught the middle and denied himself a third hundred in successive innings. Pete and Robert kept up the tempo and the running between the wickets was excellent. The fielding side were making plenty of mistakes under the pressure.

Pete and Rob were both out caught trying to push things along in the last ten overs. Umair came in and was also hitting them well, almost putting a huge six through the dressing room window. The most entertaining innings of the day and probably the decisive one was Beast’s 38 from just 14 balls. A few big sixes and a close shave for Brian’s car provided the final push of our innings and the score past the 300 mark once again.

The excellent form of the top six has meant little batting for the lower-middle order but Beast showed the dangers that lurk in the depths of our line up. Chik (the finisher) McLelland who boasts a very healthy average in the league was only needed in the last over.

It was an inauspicious start to the innings with the openers making their intent clear and depositing me to the boundary a few times. AB was bowling well at the other end finding some good swing and keeping it tight. Rhino came into the attack early and put the pressure back on the batsmen. AB picked up a couple of important wickets, one to a great catch by Drummy down the leg side. It was going to be a tough task for West Lothian to chase down this huge total. I came back on and found a better length but couldn’t persuade the umpire of a good LBW shout.

The spinners were introduced and really started to tie things up. It was great to see two excellent spells of spin from Umi and Blackie, both of them finding some turn and making life difficult for the batsmen. Blackie was unlucky not to get his first scalp on the pro-counter, as a slog sweep headed towards the school. Bobby ran round and looked to have judged the catch well. Andy Dalton, who was sitting on the boundary edge, wasn’t so sure and could be heard saying “That’s big, that’s over”. Bobby tried to prove a point and catch it in his mouth instead of his hands and only succeeded in knocking it over the rope for six.

Blackie was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his spell. He's settled in well to his role in the first team and provides another good option in the bowling. Umi deservedly increased his tally on the pro-counter to 2, bowling the pro between his legs as he tried to slog another one. With his resistance over the game petered out towards the end and there wasn’t any interest from the batsmen to increase there score and pick up some bonus points.

Another big total, another good performance in the field and another decisive win for the Forfs.
